Originally, when the Web was in its infancy, HTML content designers created documents that were incomplete The incomplete pages were made complete by using document links The E B V N completeness of a document was the sum of the pages in the document tree Think of it as follows: instead of creating a book in which you follow through the content in a sequential manner, for the Web you would paste materials together like a bunch of magazine articles But unlike a magazine that required you to go through one page after another, the Web allowed you to click a link and jump to different content As time passed, websites moved away from this distributed web structure to a strictly hierarchical self-contained structure An example of a strictly hierarchical self-contained website is illustrated in Figure 3-1.

In the Tumbleweed example as with all of the examples in this book the animations are run by a subclass of Thread Another standard technique for advancing an animation (or other punctual, repeated task) is to use a Timer and a TimerTask The TimerTask class implements the Runnable interface it s the type of Runnable that is designed to be run repeatedly at fixed intervals by scheduling it on a Timer object A typical application would be to implement the run method to contain a simple call to advance the animation and then call Timerschedule() to schedule the task 20 times a second Timer even allows you to choose what to do in case the Virtual Machine is unable to call the task on schedule for some reason.

This new version of the code sets the background color of the window to black, and then sets a strong alpha of 0.9. It also sets the transparent attribute to true, and the system chrome to none, which is required to support the transparent attribute. The onLoaded for the image now centers the image within the window. A new startup handler sets the size of the window to the full screen with a little extra and also sets the displayState of the stage to full screen as well. In Figure 3-1, the website is split into two areas: blue-background navigation and brownbackground content When a user clicks on a navigational link, the content is changed But the problem is that the entire page is reloaded even though the user is only interested in the brown-background content One way to get around this problem is to use HTML frames so that the navigational area is one frame, and the content area is another frame When a link in the navigational area is clicked, only the frame containing the content is altered However, as time has shown, although frames solve the problem of loading content individually, they are problematic from a navigational and user interface perspective Thus websites have used fewer and fewer frames.

Fixed-rate runs each task according to absolute time for example, every hour on the hour and if one run gets delayed for some reason, the next one won t be This is good for timed alarms but bad for animations because a long delay can cause the animation calls to bunch up and be run too frequently For animations there s another choice, fixed-delay, which ensures that the delay between calls will never be less than the delay that is set when the task is scheduled In the section on Using the Thread Class from 3, you saw how to implement the equivalent of a fixed-delay timer using the Thread class.

So far you showed you some of the basics of AIR integration with the native operating system. You created menus elements, you experimented with building a browser, loading PDFs, and building a photo browser. In the next example, you will be connecting to a local SQLite database.

One of the most significant features of AIR is the ability to work with a SQLite database. Having a local database allows creating offline capabilities for applications that are rich with data as well as opening the door for storing large amounts of data locally. Creating a complex application using SQLite can be challenging, because an application may use many SQL commands and multiple tables and SQLite doesn t support all these features.

Ideally, what a website developer wants is the ability to alter the content that needs to be altered and to leave the rest of the content as is After all, untouched content is content that stays the same and works..

Different classes in your application may need to use the SQLite database. You may want to keep the database connection open and avoid duplicating of code.
